Ask Patches – scattered cushions

Scattered cushions

Dear Patches,

The other day, I got bored and jumped onto the couch. I swear I smelt some treats in the cushions and I started to dig, but I couldn’t find them. I was certain Mom had hidden them from me, so I flung the first cushion through the air. Then I attacked the second cushion. I bit it and shook it around. The next thing, there were feathers in the air, floating slowly to the ground. It was amazing. So, I tried the other cushions to see if they did the same. I was totally amazed. I called Mom to have a look at the show, but she was livid. I don’t understand – why was Mom so mad?

Feathered Fowler

Patches: Oh my, Fowler, no wonder your mom nearly had a heart attack. Don’t you understand what you have done? You destroyed your mother’s scatter cushions. You obviously tore them with your digging and shaking. In future, to keep you from getting bored, ask your mom to rotate your toys, and also ask her to take you on regular walks. This will help you to get rid of excess energy. She can also buy you some educational toys to play with to keep your mind stimulated. A toy stuffed with a few treats will also keep you occupied for a while. While you’re at it, ask her for forgiveness.

Jealous dog

Dear Patches,

How jealous can one dog get? I cannot be on my mom’s lap without Jacky getting upset and making a fuss. Whenever Mom picks me up to give me a cuddles, Jacky whines and howls. She will jump up against Mom to get her attention, or she will bark so loudly that my cat ears start ringing. I will look down at her and give her my best ‘cat stare’, but Jacky will not stop, especially if I rub my cheek against Mom. I don’t do it to her when Mom picks her up. What’s wrong with this dog? Hasn’t she learnt how to share space?

Teasing Tom

Patches: You don’t do this on purpose, by any chance, do you? It sounds like you enjoy teasing Jacky by showing off how much affection you have to give. Does it really bother you that Jacky makes a fuss when you’re with your mom? If it does, then you should change your tactics. Wait until Jacky is asleep, playing somewhere or eating, before giving your mom some loving affection. And ask your mom to give Jacky a treat every time she quietly waits for her turn. But don’t tease her – that’s just mean.
