Regular walks are vital to keep your dog happy and fighting fit. When it is possible again, a trip to the park with all of its different smells is a true treat for any dog! However, as parks are public places, it’s important not only to keep save, but also to keep others in mind. Not only will this ensure that our park outings are pleasant, but in extreme cases it can even save lives.
Polite park behaviour
- Stick to the park’s rules. Do not allow your dog to run free unless it’s specified in the park’s rules that it is allowed. Some dogs are on leash for a good reason, and being approached by an off-leash dog can lead to unnecessary altercations and even injury.
- For your dog’s safety, keep him on lead upon arriving at the park and getting out of the car.
- Do not allow your dog to eat strange objects that he might find lying around. These can include everything from old bones to sweet wrappers, and many of these items can put his health at risk.
- Always take along a plastic bag and clean up after your dog. Few things can spoil a park outing quite as much as stepping in a big pile of poo.
- Don’t allow your dog to bother other people or dogs – they might not all be as friendly as he is!
- No digging is allowed in the park. The simple rule is to leave it as you found it.
- Make sure your dog is protected from ticks and fleas and that his deworming programme is up to date before you take him to the park. Do not take your puppy to the park before his initial vaccinations are up to date and he is fully protected.
- Be kind to your dog and take some drinking water along for him. The South African sun can be brutal!
- Some breeds are more inclined than others to chase animals smaller than them. Do not allow your dog to kill any wildlife that might be around.
- Put away that phone and try not to get too distracted talking to other people. Dogs can easily get themselves into trouble – keep them safe with constant supervision.
- Keep your social distancing at all times.
