4 tips for happy chickens this winter

When the temperatures drop overnight and it is freezing cold outside during winter, it is understandable that you would want to ensure that your chickens are warm in their coop. If you follow these guidelines, your chickens will be happy, warm and comfortable – without you having to spend a fortune.

1. Healthy chickens

If chickens are healthy, they can withstand colder external temperatures better. Chickens are hardier than we may think but, if they’re not well, they may suffer in the cold. Make sure that they get the best nutritionally balanced food and are free of parasites. If there are any signs of illness, take your chickens to the vet for a check-up.

2. The ideal coop

Most experts believe that there is no need to add a heat lamp or heat pads to a chicken coop. A cleverly designed and built structure will provide adequate warmth and protection from the cold. Make sure that the structure gets sun during winter, and some shade in summer.

You can also add protection from wind during winter with carefully placed screens. It is important that the coop gets some ventilation, but you don’t want cold draughts in the coop either.

Another important aspect of a good coop is enough roosting space for the chickens. They tend to get closer to each other, fluff up their feathers and keep each other warm. Make sure that there is enough space for them to do that.

The coop should also allow for deep litter to help the chickens to keep their feet warm. Wood shavings, straw or mixed bedding with a depth of about 10cm should be adequate in most coops. Remember that you need to clean the litter daily.

3. Adequate ventilation

Good ventilation is extremely important for the health of your chickens. A dry coop is much healthier for chickens than a damp one. When chicken feathers are wet, they cannot insulate the chickens properly to keep them warm.

Furthermore, chicken droppings have a strong ammonia smell, which can cause upper respiratory problems. Moist droppings mixed with other moisture can cause mouldy bedding, which is another health risk.

So, ensure that your coop is well ventilated to keep it dry, without it being too draughty.

4. Indoor activities

Just like people, chickens also keep warmer if they are active. Supply a variety of activities in the coop to keep your chickens occupied, such as logs, old ladders and sturdy branches. Make sure that your chickens are entertained in the coop during the cold nights so that they don’t get bored.
