There is so much crime in our country that it can be dangerous to take your dog for a walk. But, if you follow these tips, your walk in the park or around the neighbourhood should at least be a little safer. Unfortunately, it is not only criminals that you have to look out for. Always stay alert, wherever you go, and keep your and your dog’s safety in mind.
1. Research
Before you go on any walk, whether it is in a park or around the block, do your research. Find out what safety and security measures are in place at the park or in the neighbourhood. Also, find out whether there have recently been any incidents there – involving either people or other dogs.
While we have to be wary of criminals, we also have to be aware of other dogs who may be roaming the area. Only if you’re sure that the area is safe enough, should you take your dog there. Don’t expect your dog to protect you – you should be ready to protect him, and keep him safe. By doing proper research beforehand, you’re one step closer to being safe.
2. Protection
Before you go out with your pet, make sure that you have protection against potential criminals and other dogs. Pepper spray is one way to protect both you and your dog, and a walking stick can also double up as a self-defence weapon.
3. On lead
If you’re not familiar with the park or the neighbourhood, rather keep your dog on lead. This will help you to control him and keep him safe in a potentially dangerous situation.
4. Safety in numbers
Another way to stay safe is to take someone else with you on the walk. Not only will you be able to catch up on some gossip, but you will also make it more difficult for potential criminals to target you. If the other person is also walking his or her dog, make sure beforehand that your dogs get along.
5. Time of day
Always use your common sense – don’t walk when it is dark, in unsafe areas, or places where criminals could attack you. It is safer to walk during daylight hours, but stick to early mornings and late afternoons if it is a hot day. If you have no choice but to walk at dusk or dawn, take a torch with you, and always scan the area where you’re walking with the light.
