Ask Patches: Bothersome bees and food rations

Bothersome bees

Dear Patches,

Why are there so many annoying bees flying around the garden? Don’t they have anything better to do? Last week, I saw one of those buzzing insects flying from one flower to the next. I was curious, so I followed him. My doggy brain wanted to know what was so fascinating about the flowers that he had to stop at each one. Well… curiosity didn’t kill the cat in this case, but it did cause my mouth to swell up on the one side after he nailed his tail into my lip. I couldn’t see out of my one eye and my mouth was numb, with spit dripping out of it. My mom quickly took me to the vet, who gave me medication and removed the bee’s sting. But that night, my family giggled every time they looked at me. I hate bees!

Patches: Those little critters can cause serious harm with their stingers, especially to animals who are allergic to a bee’s sting. Luckily, you didn’t show any signs of being allergic, but it is still very uncomfortable to get the stinger removed and wait for the swelling to subside. Next time you see a bee, rather stay out of his way, and let him do what nature intended – pollinate flowers and make honey.

Food rations

Dear Patches,

I think my owners hate me – all of a sudden and out of the blue! It all started when we visited the vet. He took one look at me and – can you believe it?! – said that I’m overweight. He told my owners that I have to lose some of the kitty fat that makes me look so cute. And now, I don’t get any biltong pieces, or morning or afternoon treats, and they’re even withholding the cheese cubes! I’m on a ‘special diet’ now. I think I’m going to die of starvation.

Patches: Not getting any of those yummy treats that you’re so used to can be difficult for any cat. But just think about it this way – you will lose some of that kitty fat, and you will feel so much better and healthier. Being on this special diet will do you good. Have you started with an exercise programme yet? This doesn’t have to involve ridiculous running sessions or anything like that – playing hunting games with your toy mouse, or another pet sibling, will also help you to get back into shape. Just try it – you may like it. And best of all, you’ll be the talk of the neighbourhood!
