Hamsters are naturally curious creatures and love to forage for food. Combine these two natural behaviours with this game where your hamster has to find hidden treats under cups.
It may take a while for your hamster to get the hang of the game. Always supervise your hamster during the game to ensure that he doesn’t nibble on the paper cups.
What you need
- Small pieces of treats that your hamster enjoys
- Paper cups, toilet paper rolls or something similar
- Patience
Teaching time
Start the game in a safe area where your hamster won’t get hurt or get into danger. Ensure that the other pets can’t get to the hamster during the game. Ideally, block off the area so that he can’t run away and hide.
Step 1 Place two or three cups upside down.
Step 2 Scatter a few treats around the cups.
Step 3 Place a treat under each cup.
Step 4 Allow your hamster to explore the area and find the treats. He will most probably eat them or stuff them into his mouth.
Step 5 Once he finishes all the treats scattered around the cups, show him a hidden treat under the cup. Try to get his attention so that he will start searching for more treats.
Step 6 When your hamster has finally figured out that there are more treats under the cups, he will try to get to them. Help him to overturn the cups if he struggles. Be patient with him as he learns this.
He’ll get it
Never force your hamster to find the treats, and always allow him time to rest if he seems tired. Practise steps 4, 5 and 6 often so that he will find the treats sooner. You can also use different treats each time to keep him curious.
