Hamsters are easy to keep and make good first-time pets for small children. With the correct care, loads of attention and all the necessities, your hamster will prosper and be healthy. Although he is a small and fragile animal, and appreciates your company and interaction, be careful with your hamster and always handle him very gently.
When picking up your hamster, take it slow and give his body extra support by holding him with both hands. You don’t want to frighten him, as he might bite you. A good idea is to gently tap on the side of the cage before you pick him up so that he’ll be aware of your presence.
1. Home sweet home
Make your hamster’s cage special, as this is where he’ll spend most of his time when you’re not around. There are a variety of cages to choose from. Choose one made of wire or plastic that will provide plenty of ventilation, with a removable litter pan. The cage should be large enough for your hamster to run around without bumping into the sides. Also make sure that the cage door closes securely, so that your hamster won’t be able to escape.
2. Hideaway
Providing your hamster with a place where he can hide, warm up or take a nap will help him feel more secure. Choose something that your hamster can’t nibble on.
3. Soft bedding
Hay, paper tissue and wood shavings are ideal materials for your hamster to nest in. Make sure that these are ‘hamster-safe’, as some shavings can be toxic to your little friend.
4. Run, baby, run
A solid running wheel for your hamster is a must, as hamsters need to exercise and get rid of excess energy. If the wheel isn’t solid, your hamster can injure himself if his leg falls through one of the holes while running. A larger running wheel, of about 35cm in diameter, is preferable.
5. Accessorise
There are so many accessories that you can incorporate into your hamster’s cage, such as plastic tunnels, ladders, connecting cages and water bottles, to make his home special. Brighten up his home with some accessories and toys to stimulate play.
6. Feeding time
Make your hamster’s feeding time special by providing him with a variety of healthy food, which include assorted seeds, dried fruits and vegetables, with his commercial hamster food. Hamsters tend to gather food in their pouches on either side of their mouths to enjoy later, so don’t be surprised to find food in his nesting area.
7. Utensils
Use ceramic or pottery food bowls that your hamster can’t chew, and use a special water bottle that clip to the side of the cage.
8. Clean and fresh
Keep your hamster’s cage clean and fresh, as this will go a long way in keeping him healthy. Clean his cage at least once a week and wash his food utensils once a day, because the Aspergillus fungus grows on dirty bedding or rotten food and can cause your hamster to become ill.
9. Safe and secure
Ensure that your hamster is safe from any harm by placing his cage in a place where other pets can’t get to him. Also place his cage where it is not too hot or cold, or in an area with drafts.
