  • Donkeys are actually desert animals and have been working for humans for at least 5,000 years.
  • They were originally from Africa and Asia. These areas are mainly hot and dry – typical desert weather.
  • There were mainly two types of donkeys in Africa – the Nubian wild ass and the Somali wild ass. Today there are various breeds of donkey all over the world, and there are many donkeys who still work as pack animals, especially in underdeveloped countries.

  • There are so many names for donkeys, with the most common being ‘ass’, a few centuries ago.
  • A male donkey is known as a jack, and therefore the word jackass was used.
  • A female donkey is called a jenny or a mare. A donkey who is less than a year old is called a foal.
