Pet food safety 101

As pet owners, we all want our furry friends to stay fit and content. One of the most important ways to achieve this is by keeping their food and water clean and safe. In this article, we’ll explore some key tips for maintaining good pet food hygiene, including some lesser known but essential considerations.

1. Wash food bowls

First things first – let’s talk about food bowls. It’s essential to wash your pet’s food bowl every day, ideally after every meal. It doesn’t take long for bacteria to grow on your pet’s food bowl, especially if it’s left out for long periods. These bacteria can make your pet sick, so it’s crucial to keep his bowls clean. A dishwasher is ideal, as it sterilises the dishes.

2. Fresh water is a must

Another essential aspect of pet food hygiene is fresh water. Just like humans, pets need access to clean, fresh water at all times. Make sure to change your pet’s water every day, and remember to wash his water bowl every day too. Make sure that there are no signs of any slime or discolouration.

3. Wash your hands

When preparing your pet’s food, it’s essential to wash your hands thoroughly beforehand. This simple step can help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria to your pet’s food, which can make him sick. It’s also a good idea to wash your hands again after handling your pet’s food – and definitely after picking up his waste – as this can also transfer harmful bacteria.

4. Store food in suitable containers

When storing your pet’s food, it’s crucial to use suitable containers. This means choosing containers that are airtight and made of materials that won’t leak chemicals into the food. Keep the food in the original packaging and then place it in the container. Additionally, store your pet’s food in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and moisture. This will help prevent the growth of bacteria and mould.

5. Consider the type of food

Dry food is a popular and convenient choice for many pet owners, but it’s essential to keep in mind that it can become contaminated with bacteria or mould. To prevent this, be sure to store your pet’s dry food in a sealed container and check for any signs of spoilage, such as a rancid odour or unusual texture. Do not place an open bag directly on the floor, since this could lead to faster spoiling.

If you’re feeding your pet wet food, be aware that it can quickly become contaminated with bacteria if left out for too long. To avoid this, only serve your pet the amount of wet food they’ll eat in one sitting and promptly refrigerate any leftovers in sealed containers.

6. Mind the treats

Lastly, let’s not forget about pet treats. While they may be a tasty way to reward your pet, treats can also harbour harmful bacteria if not handled properly. Limit the number of treats you give your pet to prevent obesity and other health issues, and store them in a tightly sealed container.

7. Regular cleaning

Both humans and animals carry a lot of germs invisible to the naked eye. Although we don’t always think of these as food related, they can make us or our animals sick. The best way to prevent this is to clean our homes, bedding, furniture, ourselves and our pets regularly. We will never be able to remove all germs from our environments (and neither should we), but the goal is to bring the disease-causing microbes down to a safe level.

Hygiene is the key to good health

Maintaining good pet food and home hygiene is essential for keeping your companion animals strong and thriving. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to providing your pet with the cleanest, safest food and water possible; and enjoying a clean environment where everyone stays healthy and itch-free.

Remember, a little effort now can go a long way towards preventing illness and ensuring a long, happy life for your pet.
