Q & A: Diabetic cat

Q: How do I know if my cat suffers from diabetes?

A: It is a complex disorder caused by decreased production of insulin from the pancreas, or the insulin that does get produced is not ‘used’ in the right way.

Insulin is the hormone that controls the amount of glucose, commonly referred to as ‘blood sugar’, in your cat’s body. Most diabetic cats present with weight loss, even though they have an abnormally large appetite, together with drinking an unusually large amount of water and urinating frequently.

Other signs may include tiredness, poor body condition, lack of grooming and a poor or dry coat. Speak to your veterinarian if you suspect that your cat might be suffering from diabetes.

They will most likely run some blood and urine tests. If confirmed, it can likely mean that your cat will need daily insulin injections, just like in humans, to ensure she has a quality life.
