Q & A: Puppy safety

Q: What is the correct way to hold and carry a puppy?

A: The best way to pick up a puppy is the one that is safest for him. I prefer placing one hand under the puppy’s chest, where the rib cage is, just behind the front legs, away from his belly and soft tissue, and my other hand behind his back legs and bum, to support his rear end.

Hold the puppy close to your body to prevent him from jumping.

Be cautious of letting toddlers and young children pick up puppies or small dogs. We often see fractured legs or head trauma cases due to toddlers accidently dropping their beloved pets. Allow them to hold puppies in the manner described above while they sit on the floor.

Don’t carry a puppy on his back, like a baby. Your puppy might feel uncomfortable as it is very unnatural for him to be in this position. His natural instinct is to turn onto his tummy to protect the most vulnerable spot in his body – his chest and tummy. That’s why he will feel safer this way.
