Q & A: Worm-free parrots

Q: Do parrots need deworming?

A: Worm infestations do occur in parrots. It is important to keep the cage and the floor clean to prevent infestation. There are worms that occur in parrots, parakeets and budgies in all areas of the gastrointestinal tract, and it is especially important to deworm birds when they are newly bought. There is an increased risk for worms if there are wild birds in the area of the cage or aviary. For deworming there are a number of proprietary preparations available from your local vet. I advise owners to deworm birds at least once a year.
