Tigers are such majestic animals and so incredibly beautiful. Here are some interesting facts you might not have know about them:
- Tigers can live between -40 to 40°C.
- Tigers love water, so don’t be surprised if you see one swimming and playing in a dam or river. They even have webbed feet that help them to swim.
- At first glance, all tigers might look alike with their beautiful orange fur with black and white stripes. But, if you look more closely at the stripes on their faces and bodies, you’ll soon see that every tiger is unique.
- The pattern created by the stripes on a tiger is as unique as the fingerprints on a human are. Another interesting fact is that the stripes that you see on his fur are also on his skin.
- There are currently six types of tigers in the world: the Siberian, Bengal, Sumatran, Malayan, Indochinese and South China tigers. They are mainly classified as tigers found in the mainland areas and those found on the Sunda Islands.
- The tiger is the biggest member of the cat family.
- The male can weigh up to 310kg – that is about 100kg heavier than an average male lion.
- The male tiger also measures almost 3m in height and his claws can be as long as 10cm when they are out.
- On average, the tiger’s paw can be 20 x 20cm, which is the size of an average side plate.
- Tigers naturally live in jungles and forests, and usually live alone.
- These beautiful creatures are carnivores and will prey on just about anything they can kill, but preferably large animals.
- They hunt by themselves and will cover their leftovers with grass, leaves and other debris until they can return to their kill.
- Being nocturnal animals, they hunt mainly at night.
