Working with animals is a dream for many people. The good news is that there are a variety of professional careers in the animal health industries to consider, other than the typical neighbourhood veterinarian. Within the broader industry, there are para-veterinary professions, which include a range of exciting careers to choose from.
Wide choice
There are six professions within the veterinary and para-veterinary industry: veterinarians, veterinary nurses, animal health technicians, laboratory animal technologists, veterinary technologists and veterinary physiotherapists. All of these play their own unique and vital roles in keeping pets and other animals healthy.
To ensure that everything happens within regulations and in an ethical manner, the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) is the regulatory body that has legal authority over these professions. As the custodian of the veterinary professions, SAVC enables the veterinary team to practise ethically, by setting and monitoring veterinary standards to create a safe environment for animals and people. Meaning that there are more animal-related career opportunities within SAVC.
