Q & A: Eating cat poo

Q: How can I prevent my dog from eating the cat’s stool from the litterbox?

A: This is a very common problem, and although we may find it really disgusting, dogs probably enjoy the taste. Cat’s stools probably taste like cat food, and most dogs will eagerly eat cat food if they have the chance.

The easiest way to prevent this is simply to prevent your dog from getting to the litterbox. Either put it in a place where your dog can’t get to it, or look for a litterbox that has a flap or a lid that only the cat can access.

There may also be a possible vitamin deficiency in your dog’s diet. If you feel this may be the reason, consult with your vet and consider changing your dog’s food to a different formula that is higher in fat, fibre or protein, or has a higher vitamin content.

Dogs also sometimes do this simply because they are bored. Raiding the litterbox adds a little excitement to their day! If you feel this may be the case, try to find ways of providing your dog with more physical and mental stimulation.

Daily walks, providing interactive treat toys, something safe to chew on, a digging pit or playing fetch games will all help alleviate boredom.
