Q: When should I take my cat with diarrhoea to the vet? At the first sign of diarrhoea?
A: Our pet’s health is precious and enables them to exhibit those adorable personalities and traits we love so much. That is why it is always better to be safe and act fast when any sign of disease is noticed.
What might be only diarrhoea today, can easily progress to a severe gastrointestinal disorder and even dehydration tomorrow if left untreated. There is no such thing as being ‘over-cautious’ when it comes to your beloved pet’s health.
Cats can have diarrhoea for various reasons, some self-limiting and other more serious diseases that may be fatal if ignored. A few common examples of causes of diarrhoea in cats include:
Diet changes Changing your cat’s diet can cause gastrointestinal upset, which is why it is recommended to gradually transition from one food to another.
Parasites Intestinal worms can upset your cat’s gastrointestinal tract (GIT) system. Parasites are common causes of diarrhoea in kittens and can be prevented by regular deworming.
Infections Bacterial or viral infections causing diarrhoea can be fatal if not attended to by a veterinarian.
Stress Just like in humans, stress, anxiety and even excitement can result in GIT disturbances.
